Cooma-Monaro Shire has been encouraged by this Cultural Map project, as it has long realised the significance of its ownunique culture and history.
It is important that our cultural heritage, developed over many years, is not lost, and that our stories, history and backgrounds are passed on to future generations.
The township of Cooma has already moved to preserve some of its historical and cultural heritage buildings, including the Courthouse, gaol, Lambie Street and Raglan Gallery precincts. However, while the buildings are important to connect our present generation to our past, many unique features within this district are now becoming difficult to preserve, hence the importance of this Cultural Map process.
Some examples of our past cultural uniqueness are: the multiculturalism of the Snowy Hydro scheme, the importance of our Aboriginal people and their cultural heritage, and our early European pioneers.
This project has been initiated by the ACT Government and supported by the Commonwealth Government through the Networkling the Nation program. The participating Councils are: Bega Valley, Bombala, Boorowa, Cooma-Monaro, Eurobodalla, Crookwell, Goulburn, Gunning, Harden, Mulwaree, Queanbeyan, Snowy River, Tallaganda, Tumbarumba, Tumut, Yarrowlumla, Yass and Young.
This project has been made possible through a grant from the Commonwealth Government's
Networking the Nation program and support from the project facilitator, ACT
Government.
The Cultural Map of the ACT was launched at the National Museum on 10 May 2001, as part of Centenary of Federation celebrations.
The Regional Cultural Map was commenced in September 2001 and will continue to be developed with Commonwealth and ACT Government support until October 2002. Thereafter it is proposed that the individual Cultural Maps be continued by the Councils involved.
